    Australia downs Netherlands 4-3 in IBaF Action

    Team Australia took a 4-3 victory over Team Netherlands Thursday in the IBaF Word Cup play.  Rochester outfielder Trent Oeljent collected 3 hits in 4 at bats, recorded 2 runs and drove in 1 run, to lead the Aussie team.

    New Britain's Luke Hughes was 0-for-3 with 1 RBI, while Rochester's Glenn Williams was 1-for-3 at the plate.

    Oeltjet tripled during his first at bat and was brought in by Williams 2-out RBI double.  Oeltjen's second run in came in the bottom of the 5th off Ben Risinger's (F/A) double.

    Philadelphia's Brad Harman, who spent the 2007 season with the Clearwater Threshers, started the 9th with a lead off single.  Gavin Fingleson's (F/A) ground ball to second was bobbled by Michael Dursma's who's throw to second caromed off into center field.  Harmond advanced to 3rd on the play with no outs.  Hughes then hit a sac-fly to bring in Harmon, tying the game up 3-3.

    Oeltjen then found a pitch he liked from Dutch reliever Michael Van Kampen (F/A) and crushed the ball to the outfield wall, giving the Aussies a walk-off win.

    7'1" righthander Loek Van Mil, who played last season for the Appalachian League Elizabethton Twins worked 2 innings of relief for Team Netherlands, striking out 1.

    Australian Baseball

    Italy defeated Spain 11-2, Team USA took another shut out, this time 7-0 over Panama, Chinese Taipei took a 16-1 win over South Africa and Japan downed Mexico 15-3 in Group A play during the 2nd day of the tournament.

    Andy LaRoche (LA Dodgers) was 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs for Team Usa while Evan Longoria (Tampa Bay) went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

    In Group B play Team Canada took a mercy rule win over Thailand, crushing them 18-0 in 7 innings.  Venezuela fell to Korea, 4-0 while Cuba picked up a 7-3 win over Germany.

    Former Miracle Tim Henkenjohann pitched all 9 innings for Team Germany, allowing 7 earned runs on 14 hits and 4 walks while striking out 5.  GCL Twins pitcher Rodney Gessmann filled in briefly in the outfield, but did not bat in the game.
